Inside Mount vs. Outside Mount Guide

Understand which mounting style fits your window and situation before you buy.

Inside mount and outside mount can sound confusing at first. The main idea is simple: inside mount fits within the opening; outside mount covers around it.

What inside mount means

  • ✓The blind or shade mounts inside the window frame opening.
  • ✓It creates a cleaner, built-in look — hardware is mostly hidden.
  • ✓The window frame must have enough depth for the product to fit.
  • ✓Products typically require 1.5 to 3 inches of depth — check product specs.
  • ✓Measurement tolerance matters more — exact sizing is critical for inside mount.
  • ✓Handles, cranks, or locks inside the frame may block clearance.

What outside mount means

  • →The blind or shade mounts on the wall above and/or around the window frame.
  • →Hardware is visible on the wall surface outside the frame.
  • →Can cover light gaps that would show with inside mount.
  • →Useful when window depth is too shallow for inside mount.
  • →Often makes a window look larger by extending beyond the frame.
  • →Gives flexibility to add extra coverage width and height.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • ✗Measuring only once — windows are often not perfectly square.
  • ✗Forgetting to check the depth — inside mount requires enough space.
  • ✗Not accounting for handles, cranks, or locks inside the frame.
  • ✗Assuming all blinds and shades measure the same way — they do not.
  • ✗Not reading the product's specific measuring instructions.
  • ✗Forgetting to plan for child cord safety.

Simple decision reminder

  • •If you are unsure, take measurements and photos before shopping.
  • •Bring printed or written measurements to the store.
  • •Ask the product seller how they want measurements submitted — inside and outside mount use different measuring methods.
  • •Measure twice. Order once.
