Router Setup Helper

Understand your router, find your Wi-Fi, and get connected — one step at a time.

Router setup can feel confusing because every provider and device looks a little different. Start with the lights, the label, and one step at a time.

What Your Modem and Router Do

Modem: Brings internet service into your home from your provider (cable company, phone company, etc.).
Router: Takes that internet connection and shares it with all your devices over Wi-Fi.
Combo unit: Many homes have a single device that is both modem and router. That is normal and fine.
Wi-Fi name (SSID): The name of your wireless network that you see when connecting. Often on a label on the device.
Wi-Fi password: The password to join your network. Check the label on the bottom or back — unless it was already changed.

Basic Setup Steps

1

Plug in your modem/router

Connect power adapter. If separate modem and router, plug in modem first.

2

Connect the cable

Plug the cable or phone line into the modem as your provider directed.

3

Wait for lights to stabilize

Give it 1–3 minutes. Lights should stop blinking wildly and settle.

4

Find your Wi-Fi name (SSID)

Check the label on the bottom or back of the router. It may say 'Network Name' or 'SSID'.

5

Connect your device

Open Wi-Fi settings on your phone or computer. Select your network name. Enter the password from the label.

6

Test internet

Open a browser or app. If it loads, you are connected.

7

Move router if signal is weak

Place router somewhere central and open. Elevated and away from walls and appliances.

Router Placement Tips

Place in an open space — not inside a cabinet or closet
Avoid placing behind metal objects, appliances, or thick concrete walls
Keep off the floor if possible — elevated placement improves signal
Central location in the home usually gives better coverage
Keep away from water, heat sources, and direct sunlight
Avoid placing next to the microwave — it can interfere with Wi-Fi

Safety and Security Basics

Change the default Wi-Fi password if you can — the label password is visible to anyone who sees the device
Use a strong Wi-Fi password and store it somewhere safe
Do not share your admin/router login password casually
Avoid allowing strangers to remote into your router settings
Be careful with QR codes or setup links from unknown sources
If you receive an unsolicited call about your router or internet, hang up and call your provider directly
