Storm Prep Checklist

A calm household storm preparation checklist for every season.

Storm preparation is not about fear. It is about calmly preparing before pressure rises so you can focus on what matters when it does.

Follow local emergency guidance. For immediate danger, flooding, downed wires, gas smells, fire, injury, or unsafe conditions — call emergency services.

Before Storm Season — Household Readiness

0/12
Locate and test all flashlights — replace batteries if needed
Stock extra batteries in sizes your devices use
Identify all phone chargers and charging cables
Gather and organize important documents (ID, insurance, medical) in a waterproof folder
Check your basic first aid kit — restock expired or missing items
Store at least one gallon of water per person per day for 3 days
Stock non-perishable food for at least 3 days
Review medication supply — ensure a several-day backup if possible
Write down emergency contacts in printed form, not just in a phone
Know the location of your home's main water shutoff and breaker panel
Identify pet supplies — food, carrier, medications for each pet
Know your local emergency shelter location

Before a Specific Storm

0/8
Charge all phones and backup batteries fully
Secure loose outdoor items — furniture, decorations, potted plants, grills
Check local weather alerts and know the storm type (watch vs warning)
Fill your vehicle's gas tank if a storm or evacuation is possible
Know where your flashlights, candles, and matches are located
Fill a bathtub with water as a backup supply if severe weather is expected
Check on elderly neighbors, family members, or anyone who may need help
Avoid last-minute runs to crowded stores — plan supplies ahead of time

During the Storm

0/7
Stay indoors unless local authorities direct otherwise
Stay away from windows during high wind or severe weather
Avoid flooded roads — turn around, don't drown
Do not use generators, grills, or propane indoors — carbon monoxide risk
Keep phones charged and monitor weather alerts
Follow all instructions from local emergency management
If shelter-in-place is ordered, stay calm and follow guidance

After the Storm

0/8
Watch for downed power lines — stay far away and call the utility company
Avoid floodwater — it may contain sewage, debris, or hidden hazards
Photograph any property damage before cleanup if it is safe to do so
Check on family members, neighbors, and pets
Do not touch damaged electrical equipment
Contact your insurance provider if significant damage occurred
Contact qualified professionals for structural damage, flooding, or electrical issues
Report gas smells to your utility company and leave the building immediately
