Gutter Cleaning Awareness Guide

What gutter cleaning involves and when calling a professional is the right choice.

There is no shame in calling help for gutter work. Falls from ladders can be serious, and your safety matters more than saving a few dollars.

This guide is for awareness only. Ladder and roof work can be dangerous. Call a qualified professional if height, weather, power lines, balance, age, physical condition, or equipment makes the job unsafe.

Why Gutters Matter

  • •Gutters move rainwater away from your roof, walls, and foundation.
  • •Clogged gutters cause water to overflow and pool near the foundation.
  • •Overflow can lead to water damage, mold, basement leaks, and landscaping erosion.
  • •Clean gutters protect siding from staining and rot.
  • •In cold climates, clogged gutters contribute to ice dam formation.

Signs Gutters May Need Attention

  • •Water spilling over the sides during rain — a classic overflow sign.
  • •Plants or weeds growing inside the gutter.
  • •Sagging gutter — may be holding too much weight from debris or standing water.
  • •Water pooling near the foundation after rain.
  • •Stains or streaks on the siding below the gutters.
  • •Ice buildup or icicles hanging from gutters in winter months.

Safety First — Before Any Ladder Work

0/8
Assess the height — is this a single-story or multi-story home?
Check ground conditions — is the ground level and firm?
Check weather — avoid working in wet, icy, or windy conditions
Check for power lines — stay at least 10 feet away from any electrical lines
Inspect the ladder before use — no loose, bent, or damaged parts
Set ladder on firm, level ground — never lean it on the gutter
Do not overreach — move the ladder instead of stretching
Have someone nearby if working at height
