Water Shutoff Helper

Understand where water shutoff valves may be located and what information to gather before an emergency.

Many people do not know where their water shutoff is until something leaks. Finding it calmly before an emergency can save stress later.

Why water shutoffs matter

  • →A shutoff valve can reduce water damage during a leak — if you know where it is.
  • →Most homes have individual shutoffs at fixtures AND a main shutoff for the whole home.
  • →Shutoff valves may look different depending on home age, region, and plumbing type.
  • →Finding them before a problem is much calmer than searching during a leak.

Common places to look safely

•Under sinks — Kitchen, bathroom, utility
•Behind toilets — Small oval valve near wall
•Near water heater — Utility room or closet
•Basement / utility room — Near where main line enters
•Crawlspace access — Only if safe to enter — do not force entry
•Garage area — Some homes run supply through garage
•Outside wall / meter area — Depends on region and home type
•Apartment utility closet — Only if accessible and allowed

What not to do

  • ✗Do not force a valve that will not turn — it may break or worsen a problem.
  • ✗Do not enter unsafe crawlspaces or dark unfamiliar areas without proper lighting and safety awareness.
  • ✗Do not touch electrical equipment near water or wet areas.
  • ✗Do not open sealed or locked utility equipment.
  • ✗Do not handle municipal meter equipment unless authorized to do so.

What to write down for each valve

  • →Location of the valve
  • →What it appears to control (toilet, kitchen sink, whole home, etc.)
  • →Whether it turns easily
  • →Whether it shows any dripping or moisture
  • →Who to call if it does not work or is stuck

When to call qualified help

•Stuck or frozen valve
•Leaking valve or fitting
•Corroded or damaged pipes
•No visible shutoff found
•Active leak or flooding
•Water near electrical outlets or panels
•Uncertain about apartment or building systems
•Mold or water damage signs
