Choosing Light Bulbs Helper
How to pick the right replacement bulb safely and confidently.
Light bulb labels can be confusing because stores use watts, lumens, color temperature, shape, and base type all at once. Let's break it down simply.
What to Check First
Before buying, check the old bulb or the label inside the fixture:
- •Bulb shape — the physical shape (globe, candle flame, standard A-shape, flood, tube).
- •Base type — the part that screws or pins into the socket (most common: medium screw base E26).
- •Maximum wattage — printed inside the fixture. Never exceed this number.
- •Brightness in lumens — higher lumens = brighter light.
- •Color temperature — how warm or cool the light looks.
- •Dimmable or non-dimmable — check if your fixture uses a dimmer switch.
- •Indoor or outdoor rating — outdoor fixtures may need a rated bulb.
- •Damp or wet location rating — required for bathrooms, covered porches, and similar areas.
Watts vs Lumens
Watts measure how much electricity the bulb uses — not how bright it is.
Lumens measure actual brightness. More lumens = brighter light.
LED bulbs use far fewer watts than old incandescent bulbs for the same brightness. A 60-watt equivalent LED may only use 8–10 watts. Look for the lumen number, not just the watt number, when comparing bulbs.
Color Temperature
2700K — Warm White
Soft, yellowish glow. Comfortable for bedrooms and living rooms.
3000K — Soft White
Slightly brighter warm tone. Common in kitchens and bathrooms.
4000K — Cool White
Neutral, clean light. Good for work areas and garages.
5000–6500K — Daylight
Bright bluish-white light. Used in workshops, reading lamps, and outdoor areas.
