Grout & Thinset Planning Helper
This is a planning helper — not a precise universal calculator. Grout and thinset coverage varies heavily by product, tile size, joint width, trowel size, and surface condition. Always follow your product's label instructions.
Grout and thinset can feel confusing because every product is a little different. This helper walks you through what to think about before you buy.
Leave blank if you don't know — we'll tell you what to look for.
What Affects Coverage
Tile size:
Smaller tiles = more joints = more grout per sq ft. Mosaics use significantly more grout than large tiles.
Grout joint width:
Wider joints require more grout. Narrow rectified tile joints use very little.
Trowel size & thinset:
Larger or heavier tiles need a larger notch trowel and more thinset. Always check the tile manufacturer's recommendation.
Surface condition:
Uneven surfaces, walls, or out-of-level floors may require a leveling layer or extra thinset.
Grout type:
Sanded grout is for wider joints. Unsanded grout for narrow joints. Using the wrong type can cause cracking or poor adhesion.
