Washer / Dryer Basics
Common safety habits, basic checks, and knowing when to stop and call qualified help.
This guide is general awareness only. For gas appliances, electrical issues, water leaks, burning smells, overheating, or unsafe conditions, contact qualified help.
Washers and dryers can be confusing because they mix water, heat, movement, lint, and electricity or gas. Start with simple checks and stop when safety is uncertain.
Washer Basics
- •Do not overload — clothes need room to move for a proper wash
- •Use the correct type and amount of detergent for your machine (HE machines require HE detergent)
- •Check water hoses periodically for cracks, bulges, or leaks
- •A machine that shakes or walks is often unevenly loaded or not level
- •Leave the door or lid open after washing if manufacturer allows — helps prevent odors
- •Wipe the door seal of front-load washers to prevent mold buildup
Dryer Basics
- •Clean the lint trap before every load — a clogged trap is a fire hazard
- •Periodically check that the dryer vent and exterior vent flap are clear of lint
- •Do not overload the dryer — clothes need air circulation to dry properly
- •Never dry items contaminated with flammable chemicals, oils, or solvents
- •A burning smell during drying is a warning sign — stop immediately
- •Keep the area around the dryer clear of lint, clothing, and combustibles
Dryer vent blockage is one of the leading causes of household fires. If your dryer is taking significantly longer than normal to dry clothes, or feels very hot on top, the vent may be restricted. This situation calls for professional vent cleaning.
Common Issues
- •Washer shaking excessively — often uneven load or unlevel machine
- •Washer smells musty or sour — often door seal or detergent residue buildup
- •Washer not draining — drain hose issue, pump problem, or clog
- •Dryer taking too long — lint trap, vent blockage, or overload
- •Dryer overheating or very hot to touch — stop and get help
- •Dryer not starting — check power, door latch, and settings
