Garbage Disposal Safety

Safe awareness around garbage disposals — including the most important safety rule of all.

NEVER put your hand inside a garbage disposal — even when you believe it is off. Always turn off power at the switch and at the circuit breaker before any attempt to check or clear a jam.

Never put hands into a garbage disposal. This guide is general safety awareness only. For electrical concerns, leaks, jams you cannot safely clear, or unsafe conditions, contact qualified help.

Garbage disposals are one of those appliances where safety matters more than curiosity. If you are unsure — stop and get help. There is nothing worth risking your hand over.

Basic Disposal Safety Rules

  • •Never put hands inside the disposal — ever
  • •Turn off power at the wall switch before any troubleshooting
  • •For jam attempts — turn off at both wall switch AND breaker
  • •Use tongs or pliers only — never fingers — if trying to remove an object with power confirmed off
  • •Run cold water as the manufacturer recommends — before, during, and after use
  • •Do not overload with large amounts at once
  • •Do not use the disposal for non-food items

Common Issues

  • •Humming but not spinning — often a jam; use jam wrench at bottom if accessible, power off
  • •Complete silence — check that the reset button (bottom of unit) has not tripped
  • •Bad smell — food debris buildup; use ice cubes and cold water or manufacturer cleaner
  • •Not turning on at all — check wall switch, breaker, and reset button
  • •Leaking — could be seal, drain connection, or mounting issue
  • •Draining slowly — possible drain clog, not necessarily disposal issue

What Not to Put in a Disposal

  • •Grease, oil, or fat — builds up in pipes over time
  • •Bones or hard shells — can damage blades
  • •Utensils, silverware, or any metal or hard objects
  • •Large amounts of starchy or fibrous foods (check your specific model's guidance)
  • •Non-food items of any kind
  • •Harsh chemical drain cleaners — can damage disposal and pipes
