Dishwasher Basic Checks

Simple first checks for common dishwasher issues and knowing when to stop and call qualified help.

This guide is general awareness only. For leaks, electrical concerns, burning smells, repeated error codes, or hardwired appliances, contact qualified help.

Dishwashers hide a lot of moving parts behind one door. A few simple checks can help, but water and electricity mean you should stop when safety is uncertain.

Common Dishwasher Issues

  • •Not cleaning well — dishes coming out dirty or with food residue
  • •Not draining — standing water at the bottom after a cycle
  • •Leaking — water on the floor during or after a cycle
  • •Bad smell — food debris, blocked filter, or mold in door seal
  • •Dishes still wet after drying cycle — rinse aid, heat dry setting, or door seal
  • •Door not latching properly — latch, door alignment, or seal issue
  • •Error lights or codes — consult the owner's manual for the specific code

Safe First Checks

  • •Check and clean the dishwasher filter if your model has one — see owner's manual for location
  • •Make sure spray arms can spin freely — nothing blocking them
  • •Load dishes so they do not block spray arms or detergent dispenser
  • •Use the correct dishwasher detergent — not hand soap or general dish soap
  • •Check and refill rinse aid if applicable
  • •Inspect the door gasket/seal for debris or damage
  • •If drain issue began after a garbage disposal was recently installed — check the disposal knockout plug was removed (a job for a qualified person)

What Not to Do

  • •Do not force a door or latch that is not closing properly
  • •Do not ignore any water leak — even a small one can cause floor damage
  • •Do not open or touch electrical panels inside the unit
  • •Do not mix cleaning chemicals inside the dishwasher
  • •Do not keep running the dishwasher if water is actively leaking
